It's YOUR Story

As an author coach and publishing mentor, I find inspiration in the most unexpected places. Today, it came from — of all things — a haircut. I had been putting off my salon visit for months. When I finally sat in the chair, I braced myself for what’s become a familiar dance: trying to explain exactly how I want my hair cut. You see, I’ve had stylists tell me things like:
"We don't do that."
"That's like two different haircuts!"
"It's not the way we do it."
And inevitably, I’d leave frustrated — wishing I’d spoken up, or worse, heading home to “fix” it myself. But this time, I decided things would be different. I took a deep breath, described exactly what I wanted, and stood firm — not pushy, but confident. The stylist listened. She offered her thoughts, and I considered them. But I also trusted my own instincts. When it was done, I left not only loving my haircut, but feeling proud that I had honored my vision.
How a Haircut Mirrors the Author Journey
That simple experience reminded me so much of what I see every day working with authors.
Many new (and even experienced) authors struggle with the same thing: balancing professional input with personal vision.
Editors, illustrators, designers, and marketing experts each bring valuable skills to the table. But sometimes their opinions can overshadow your creative instincts. And that can lead to frustration — or even regret.
Here’s what I tell my clients all the time:💡 This is your book. Your story. Your dream.
Listen to professionals — yes. Take in their advice. But never lose sight of your vision. Speak up for what matters to you. You are the author, and that means you are the creative director of your project.
Finding Confidence in Your Creative Voice
Publishing a book — especially your first — can feel overwhelming. You want to get it right, but it’s easy to second-guess yourself. The truth is, confidence doesn’t mean ignoring expert advice; it means collaborating from a place of clarity. When you clearly understand your goals, audience, and message, you can confidently navigate professional guidance — choosing what fits and leaving what doesn’t. That balance is where great books (and great experiences) are born.
How I Help Authors Find and Trust Their Voice
That’s exactly what I love helping authors do through my coaching and publishing programs.
At Little Labradoodle Publishing and Self-Publishing Made Simple, I guide authors step-by-step through the publishing process — from idea to printed book — helping them make confident, informed decisions every step of the way.
Whether it’s:
Understanding the editing process
Working with illustrators
Setting up your book on Amazon or Ingram Spark
Building your author platform
Or planning your launch strategy
My goal is to help you stay empowered, educated, and aligned with your vision — while surrounded by a team that supports it. Because your story deserves to be told your way.
Final Thoughts
So, the next time you find yourself sitting in that metaphorical “stylist’s chair,” unsure if you should speak up — take a breath and remember:
👉 You’re not just creating a book — you’re creating something deeply personal and meaningful.
👉 Your voice matters. 👉 And you have every right to stand up for it. After all, it’s not just a haircut… and it’s not just a book. It’s your story — and it deserves to be shaped with confidence.

April, first, I love your hair. Your story touched me. They were so many times, I wish I had spoken up. I did not want my daughter to be like me. At the age of 4 she wanted to know the price of a toy. I had her ask the clerk. She did not want to but did. She speaks up for herself and is never rude. I learned a lot from her.
April you are a remarkable woman. Thank you for you making us better authors and people.
This is why I love working with you, April. You encourage us and help us fulfill our dreams.
